The Thuringian AfD state chairman Björn Höcke has triggered criticism across party lines — reaching all the way into his own Bundestag faction — with remarks about East and West Germans.

What is it about?

In an interview with the Swiss magazine "Weltwoche," Höcke had quoted a sentence he claimed to have read "somewhere": "In the western Republic, German-speaking Americans live, and in the east of the Republic, German-speaking Germans live." In the same interview, he went on to explain: "In the east, the people are still Germans; in the west, they have found a substitute identity over decades and have allowed themselves to be completely usurped by American culture." Höcke called "Americanism" "an antithesis to German-ness" and linked it to a current "war course against Moscow."
