Archaeologists from the Brandenburg State Office for Monument Preservation presented the discovery of a large burial ground from the late Stone Age and early Bronze Age, found during the expansion of the Angermünde-Szczecin railway line, at Berlin Central Station on Thursday.
The site near Casekow in the Uckermark district represents the first excavation of a so-called Oder Corded Ware burial field in 60 years. The last comparable find was made near Luckow.
In total, the team uncovered around 30 skeletal graves and one cremation burial. The graves were covered with a stone pavement, a detail that points to a uniform burial ritual.
A Uniform Ritual at the End of the Stone Age
"At Casekow, the graves were covered with a stone pavement," reported Michael Müller, head of research at the office. "We have a uniform burial ritual here that was carried out at the end of the Stone Age."
