The pro-Western government camp of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is ahead in the Armenian parliamentary election according to initial projections, with the opposition around billionaire Samvel Karapetyan following at a clear distance in second place.
Projections and Preliminary Results
According to the Central Election Commission, 57 percent of Armenians voted for Prime Minister Pashinyan's Civil Contract party based on the initial figures. The election commission had already announced an initial preliminary result in the capital Yerevan, according to which the party received about 54 percent of the votes. Pashinyan then claimed victory for his party "Civil Contract."
The most important opposition party, "Strong Armenia," led by businessman Karapetyan, was attributed about 22 percent, while later projections put the share of the vote at 21 percent. Thus, despite the sensational campaign around Karapetyan, the pro-Russian force became the second strongest faction in parliament by a clear margin. Other parties played no notable role according to the preliminary figures.
