Austrian Fashion Photographer Elfie Semotan Dies at 84

Early Life and Move to Paris

Her first professional images were made in the 1960s for the legendary magazine Twen, with John Cook modelling for her. Returning to Austria in 1968, she went on to become one of the country's most influential fashion and portrait photographers, working for international publications including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Esquire and The New Yorker, and photographing Hollywood stars such as Brad Pitt, Willem Dafoe and Marion Cotillard.

Semotan also created iconic advertising campaigns for Austrian brands, including Palmers and Römerquelle. In 2024, she was awarded the Grand State Prize for Culture of the State of Upper Austria in the photography category, a recognition of her decades-long contribution to the field.

A Quiet Revolution in Fashion Photography

A defining theme of her work was the deconstruction of glamorous fashion imagery. As she told Der Standard: "Mir ging es darum, die Modefotografie aus dieser eleganten, exklusiven, teuren Umgebung herauszuholen. Ich wollte Mode in hässlichen Hotelzimmern fotografieren, Dinge, die zum täglichen Leben gehören, in die Modestrecken integrieren." She had a knack for placing subjects in everyday surroundings, prompting Claudia Schiffer to juggle potatoes and famously cropping Naomi Campbell's head from a frame.

Midway through her career, Semotan faced a public reckoning. In the mid-1970s, her photographs of women in underwear triggered a substantial scandal, and she was met with accusations of sexism. The episode did not derail her career but became part of a longer conversation about representation in fashion photography.

Personal Life and Loss

Her personal life was marked by deep partnerships and sudden losses. In Vienna and in a renovated old farmhouse in southern Burgenland, she lived for 18 years with the artist Kurt Kocherscheidt, with whom she had two sons, Ivo and August. After Kocherscheidt died in 1992, the fashion designer Helmut Lang, whom she had met in Vienna in the 1980s and with whom she shared a lifelong friendship, suggested she move to the United States. In 1996, she married the German artist Martin Kippenberger; he died a year and a half later, and her portraits of him contributed to his growing legend.

In her later years, Semotan made it a personal mission to challenge how older women were depicted. As she put it, she wanted "andere Bilder von älteren Frauen zu machen." It should not be the case, she said, that older women had to look merely pleasant in photographs — a remark that captured the respectful, unhurried approach to her subjects for which she was known.

A Reluctant Subject in Her Own Right

Her most recent public project was a photo series marking the upcoming 25th anniversary of Vienna's Museumsquartier, in which she portrayed various personalities and, in a rare turn, allowed herself to be photographed as well. Earlier recognition included the retrospective 'Haltung und Pose' at Kunst Haus Wien in 2021 and the 2019 documentary 'Elfie Semotan. Photographer' by Joerg Burger.

Throughout her career, Semotan herself remained reluctant to sit for the camera. "Warum gibt es so wenige Porträts von Ihnen?" she was asked often, and the Upper Austrian-born photographer would typically respond that she rarely liked the way she looked in pictures. The contrast between her visibility as a photographer and her absence as a subject became, in itself, a quiet hallmark of her public persona.

She is survived by her two sons. Tributes from the Austrian cultural world are expected in the days following the announcement of her death.
