Semotan reportedly suffered cardiac arrest while swimming in the Jennersdorf outdoor pool, in the southern Burgenland region of Austria where she had long maintained a home.
Born on 25 July 1941 in Wels, in Upper Austria, Semotan left the provincial town as a young woman. After attending the Hetzendorf fashion school in Vienna, she moved to Paris at the age of 20 with 700 schillings in her pocket. She began her career as a model in Paris before moving behind the camera in the early 1970s, a transition that would define the rest of her working life.
