Bencic loses round of 16 to Svitolina – Teichmann plays for quarter-finals on Sunday

First Set and Turning Point

The match turned in the second set. Svitolina, the Ukrainian world number seven, improved and forced a deciding set. It was the first time in this year's tournament that Bencic had to play a third set.

The deciding set became a nightmare for Bencic. Svitolina won it 6:0 and decided the match after 2 hours and 5 minutes. For Svitolina, it was her fifth consecutive victory against Bencic within seven years. The Ukrainian had entered the match with ten consecutive wins – including the tournament victory in Rome.

Gaël Monfils, Svitolina's husband, had already been eliminated in Paris a few days earlier. The 31-year-old is the mother of a daughter named Skaï. Bencic is also a mother to a child named Bella. Both players are among the mothers on the WTA Tour.

Svitolina's Next Opponent

In the quarter-finals, Svitolina will face her compatriot Marta Kostjuk. Kostjuk had eliminated Iga Swiatek, the four-time tournament winner, in the previous round. Before that, Kostjuk had also defeated the Swiss player Viktorija Golubic.

From a Swiss perspective, attention now turns to Jil Teichmann. The 28-year-old left-hander from Switzerland is also in the round of 16 on Sunday and will face the number 8 seed, Mirra Andreeva. Teichmann advanced to the main draw via her Protected Ranking.

Teichmann's Path to the Round of 16

Teichmann had already drawn attention with strong performances in previous rounds. She defeated Ludmila Samsonova (WTA 27), Magdalena Frech (WTA 46), and Karolina Muchova (WTA 10), the finalist of Roland Garros 2023. By reaching the third round, she equaled her best Grand Slam result from four years ago.

For her performances in Paris so far, Teichmann has received 285,000 Euros in prize money – the highest sum she has earned in a single tournament in the past four years. She is expected to improve her ranking by around 30 places and move up to position 140.

Andreeva as the Next Hurdle

In the duel with Andreeva, which lasted 73 minutes, Teichmann fell behind at 3:3 in the first set and only won two more games thereafter. The match ended 3:6, 2:6 from her perspective. Andreeva, 19 years old and from Siberia, has thus reached the quarter-finals of Roland Garros for the second consecutive time. She is coached by Conchita Martinez.

While Bencic had to bow out on Mother's Day, Teichmann has already made a statement by reaching the round of 16. On Sunday, the second Swiss player in Paris now has the chance to advance to the quarter-finals.
