Belinda Bencic lost to Elina Svitolina 6:4, 4:6, 0:6 in the round of 16 at the French Open in Paris, while her compatriot Jil Teichmann will play for the quarter-finals against Mirra Andreeva on Sunday.
Bencic, 29 years old and from Eastern Switzerland, reached the round of 16 at the French Open for the first time on Mother's Day in Paris – in her eighth participation in the clay court tournament. The duel with Svitolina, who is two years older, was played on Court Philippe-Chatrier, the largest court at the Roland-Garros complex. Before the match, Bencic had announced the encounter with the words "It will be a cool Battle of the Mums."
Bencic won the first set after 43 minutes. She took a 5:2 lead by breaking Svitolina's serve twice in a row. By winning the first set, the Swiss player reached the second week of the tournament in Paris for the first time.
