The Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office closed the barbecue lawn in Berlin's Görlitzer Park on Friday morning after a heavy infestation of oak processionary caterpillars posed a health risk to visitors.

The closure, announced by the Bezirksamt Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, affects the designated Grillwiese in the park in Berlin-Kreuzberg and will remain in place "bis die notwendigen Maßnahmen abgeschlossen sind und keine Gesundheitsgefahr mehr besteht." A reopening date has not been set, and as of Friday midday it was still unclear whether the wider park would also need to be closed.

Oak processionary moths (Eichenprozessionsspinner, or EPS) are a species of butterfly whose caterpillars develop extremely fine urticating hairs from the third larval stage onward. These hairs contain a toxin that can cause skin irritation, eye inflammation, respiratory tract irritation, shortness of breath, and allergic reactions when they come into contact with skin or mucous membranes. The hairs can be carried on the wind and remain active in abandoned nests for long periods, which is why the district office "dringend davon abgeraten" people to touch caterpillars, nests, or even to linger in the immediate vicinity of infested trees.
