Berlin, Munich, and Rhein-Ruhr Submit Final Olympic Concepts to DOSB

Three Bidders, One Process

The first selection stage focused on the operational feasibility of the concepts. This included, among other things, considerations for competition venues, logistics, accommodation, and sustainability. Only after passing this phase did the bidders move on to the political and societal evaluation.

The second stage was dedicated to the political and societal support for the respective bids. Signals from the federal states, municipalities, and the population were crucial for this. The mood in the respective regions was also taken into account in the assessment.

Referendums and Parliamentary Votes as Indicators

In Munich and in the Rhein-Ruhr region, citizens had previously voted clearly in favor of an Olympic bid. In Berlin, the House of Representatives voted by a majority in favor of a bid. Hamburg, which had also expressed interest, withdrew its candidacy after a negative referendum.

With the submission of the final documents, the final phase of the national selection process now begins. The DOSB will decide on September 26 which of the three regions will represent Germany in the international competition. The decision is considered an important intermediate step before the DOSB declares an official candidacy to the International Olympic Committee.

Decision on September 26

For the unsuccessful bidders, the DOSB's decision means the end of the national process, but not necessarily the end of all future plans. The developed concepts could serve as a basis for future bids or contribute to the further development of the respective sports landscape. This is particularly true for Munich, which has already gained experience with previous Olympic bids.

Which city will ultimately win the race is open. Industry observers see advantages and disadvantages in all three concepts, for example, in the stadium concept, accommodation, and transport infrastructure. The DOSB emphasized that the final decision will be made based on the submitted concepts, the political framework, and societal support.
