Taskforce seeks ways against the chaos

The city of Bonn is responding in parallel with a series of measures to the closure. At a press conference of the city of Bonn, Mayor Guido Déus announced that he would put the plan for free public transport in June to a vote. Previously, the city's taskforce had brought the project into play as a further idea to prevent a traffic chaos following the closure of the North Bridge.

So far, however, the proposal has not been approved. The city council must still approve the plans. Only after a corresponding vote could public transport in Bonn become free for everyone in June, according to the city administration.

Impact on commuters and residents

In addition to free local transport, the taskforce is working on further relief measures for residents in districts such as Bonn-Beuel and Bonn-Auerberg, which are particularly affected by diverted traffic. According to earlier statements, this also includes adjustments to bus and rail services as well as targeted traffic management.

Already in recent days, there had been traffic jams on the detour routes around the bridge, as many commuters diverted to routes crossing the Rhine. The opening of the junction is intended to provide noticeable relief here. Dirk Brandenburger of Autobahn GmbH had previously pointed out the importance of the connection for the entire Rhineland region.

The North Bridge itself is likely to remain closed for an extended period. Renovation or new construction plans are currently being examined by Autobahn GmbH. Until a final solution is found, the A565 remains interrupted between the junctions in the area of the bridge, which continues to pose major challenges for commuter traffic.

Vote in city council on Thursday

For the citizens of Bonn, the closure of the North Bridge means considerable restrictions in everyday life. In addition to traffic disruptions, longer travel times, full buses and trains, and a burden on residential streets are looming. The city is therefore relying on a package of infrastructure adjustments and short-term relief measures such as the possible free public transport.

The vote in the city council on Thursday is considered an important mood test for the city's handling of the crisis. Should the council approve the project, free public transport could provide noticeable relief as early as June and encourage people to switch to buses and trains.
