In late August 2025, Bonn police responded to the "Zur Erholung" guesthouse in Bornheim-Hersel after the discovery of the lifeless body of the establishment's owner. The 70-year-old man had been running the guesthouse for about thirty years and was a well-known figure in the small town. His body was found in the hotel office.

According to the court's conviction, the defendant, a long-time friend of the victim, went to the hotelier's office at the end of August 2025 and strangled him with an object, before wrapping the deceased's head with adhesive tape. The accused knew the premises perfectly and had keys to the building, but he nevertheless forced a resident of the guesthouse to open the doors for him and accompany him to the office where the body was discovered.

The court also ruled that the scene of the body's discovery had been staged by the defendant, who then alerted the emergency services. The defendant is thus considered the last person to have seen the victim alive.

The central material evidence in the case lies in the presence of DNA belonging to the defendant between the layers of adhesive tape wrapped around the victim's head. Other genetic traces of the suspect were also found on the body and clothing of the deceased, which the accused attributed to his regular visits to the guesthouse over the past three decades.

For the court, there is a "Bündel von Indizien, die man für eine Verurteilung heranziehen könne" — a bundle of circumstances that can be used to establish a conviction. The magistrates also noted that the defendant had repeatedly changed his statements, adapting his explanations to the evolving evidence, a behavior they considered further proof of his guilt.

On the other hand, neither the precise sequence of events nor the motive for the crime could be established with certainty. The prosecution argued that the accused had acted out of greed, strangling his friend from behind to steal a pendant necklace and a stone-studded ring, and that he intended to continue operating the hotel after the hotelier's death. The court was unable to confirm the theft of these jewels, nor to determine who had taken the victim's tablet and mobile phone, which could have contained surveillance video recordings.

Throughout the hearing, the defendant maintained his innocence, stating that he had known his friend for thirty years and could not have killed him.

The verdict, which represents an intermediate solution between the prosecution's most severe demands and the defense's request for acquittal, caught observers by surprise. The defense lawyer, Martin Kretschmer, described the decision as "Ein Überraschungs-Urteil, mit dem keiner gerechnet hatte" (A surprise verdict that no one had expected), while announcing an appeal for review on behalf of his client.

Several observers present at the trial believe that the civil party and the prosecution will also not be satisfied with this decision and will also appeal. The proceedings could therefore continue before a higher court, in a case that continues to raise questions about the exact circumstances of the tragedy that occurred at the "Zur Erholung" guesthouse.
