Bundestag: Pay raise of nearly 500 euros set to be cancelled this year

Background: Linkage to wage development

The regular pay increase, which is tied to wage developments, would have amounted to nearly 500 euros this year. According to the will of the CDU/CSU and SPD, this adjustment is now to be scrapped. As the Deutsche Presse-Agentur learned from the coalition factions, a corresponding draft law is in preparation.

The factions of the Union and SPD have decided, according to information from the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, to abolish by draft law the increase in Bundestag members' pay by nearly 500 euros planned for 1 July, still this week.

Next steps in parliament

The draft law must, after the first reading, be deliberated in the responsible committees before the Bundestag votes on it. Given the broad support also from the opposition factions, a swift procedure is considered likely. When the second and third readings are to take place remains open.
