Theft of non-ferrous metal near Roitzsch significantly disrupted S-Bahn traffic in the Halle, Bitterfeld, Dessau, and Leipzig areas, as well as parts of ICE traffic between Halle and Berlin, on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening around 10:00 PM when unknown perpetrators stole non-ferrous metal from a switchgear area near Roitzsch, triggering widespread signal failures in the rail network. Since early Wednesday morning, numerous signal boxes have failed in the Bitterfeld area, and many signals are no longer showing green. Deutsche Bahn spoke of cable theft with considerable consequences for local and long-distance transport in Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony.

In local transport, S-Bahn lines S2 between Halle and Dessau, and S8 between Dessau and Leipzig, were completely interrupted or severely delayed since Wednesday morning. The regional express RE 13 was also affected by the restrictions. Passengers had to use shuttle buses that were set up on the affected routes. Individual S-Bahn connections were also canceled entirely.
