The CDU has canceled a presidium meeting planned for the end of August in Magdeburg because Minister-President Sven Schulze wants to focus on the state election campaign in Saxony-Anhalt.

The Christian Democratic Union is foregoing an internal party meeting in Saxony-Anhalt. As Der Spiegel reports, citing party circles, the presidium meeting of the federal executive board, originally planned for the end of August in the state capital Magdeburg, has been canceled. The CDU leadership had deliberately chosen the meeting location with the state election on September 6th in Saxony-Anhalt in mind.

Backgrounds of the Cancellation

A spokesperson for the CDU confirmed the cancellation to the German Press Agency but did not comment on the reasons. It remains unclear whether the postponement will be officially justified by election campaign preparations or by internal party considerations. According to Spiegel, party circles stated that Minister-President Sven Schulze had requested the cancellation of the date in order to concentrate on the election campaign.
