Orders in German industry fell in April almost twice as sharply as expected, with the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden reporting on Monday a 3.8 percent drop in new business compared to the previous month.

Unexpectedly Sharp Decline

The Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced on Monday that orders in German industry fell by 3.8 percent in April compared to the previous month. Economists polled by Reuters had only expected a decline of 2.0 percent. The drop was thus nearly twice as severe as forecast.

The Ifo Institute stated that supply chains remained strained. Klaus Wohlrabe explained: „Die Lieferketten bleiben angespannt. Vor allem Branchen mit hohem Bedarf an öl- und energieintensiven Vorprodukten spüren die Folgen der geopolitischen Spannungen."
