Die Toten Hosen Release Final Album 'Trink aus, wir müssen gehen!'

The core lineup — Campino, Andi, Breiti, Kuddel, and drummer Vom Ritchie, who after nearly 30 years still feels like 'the new guy' — wrote and developed the songs together in the studio in classic Hosen fashion.

A Raw Return to Form

Campino's lyrics span love songs like 'Schicksal' and 'Glück', anthems such as 'Die Show muss weitergehen', political statements like 'Was ist mit uns los', and farewell tracks including 'Augen zu'. Kuddel opens one song with a shouted '1, 2, 3, 4' just like the old days.

The album cover, shot by star photographer Andreas Gursky, shows the band standing in front of an old Opel — a homage to their 1983 debut 'Opel Gang', but far more polished and grandiose.

Accompanying the main album is the extensive bonus disc 'Alles muss raus!', on which the Hosen recorded 25 songs with numerous artists that hold special meaning for them.

Hope Amid the Farewell

Despite the weight of the present moment, the band does not leave their fans without hope. A quoted lyric captures the sentiment: 'Auch wenn du grad nicht lächeln kannst, und auf gar nichts mehr vertraust. Ist dein Laden heute abgebrannt, machst du ihn morgen wieder auf.'

The WDR interview with Jannis Riemann of the band 'Deine Nachbarn' frames the release within a broader punk landscape. Riemann declares, 'Die Zukunft des Punks ist großartig. Der Rest der Welt muss sich Sorgen machen.'

The Wider Musical Landscape

The album was produced in collaboration with Iranian-Swedish hitmaker Ilya Salmanzadeh, who also worked on recent projects by Ariana Grande and Paul McCartney.

Grande's upcoming album 'Petal', announced in April, features the single 'Hate That I Made You Love Me', which she describes as 'something that is full of life and grows between the leaps of something cold and hard and challenging' — a bit like the flowers in her new song.

Paul McCartney's 20th solo album 'The Boys Of Dungeon Lane', years in the making, offers 14 autobiographical rock-pop songs recalling his early years with George and John before the fame. McCartney sings, 'Step right up and take a look, see what you can find / Cause all my life's an open book, come inside my mind.'

While McCartney's work is among the most open of his career, the WDR feature notes that no one should expect him to reveal his very last intimate secrets.
