Drone sightings caused at least 60 million euros in damage at German airports last year, and taking into account consequential costs, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) estimates the total damage at up to 160 million euros.
According to calculations by the German Aerospace Center, the air traffic industry sustained damages of at least 60 million euros. The figure includes additional operating costs due to delays, diversions, and cancellations. If revenue losses and other knock-on effects are also taken into account, the damage rises to up to 160 million euros, according to the analysis.
Hubs in Focus: Munich and Frankfurt
According to the German Aerospace Center, there were 116 relevant disruption incidents at 25 airports last year. Seventy percent of all flight diversions due to drone sightings were attributable to extensive incidents at hubs such as Munich and Frankfurt. The analysis is based on data from the Federal Aviation Office.
