Ebola is one of the most dangerous known pathogens. Depending on the strain and the level of care available, the case fatality rate can exceed 50 percent. Treatment focuses on isolation, rehydration, and symptomatic care; approved vaccines and therapeutics are available only to a limited extent. In the current response, vaccines are being deployed using the ring vaccination principle, in which contacts of infected individuals are specifically vaccinated.

Attacks on burial teams are a well-known problem in Ebola response, because ritual burials play a central role in the affected communities. Ebola outbreaks have repeatedly occurred in the Congo in recent years. Experience from previous epidemics has meant that laboratory capacities and vaccine stockpiles can be mobilized more quickly than they could a decade ago. At the same time, experts warn that the unstable security situation and the size of the country make comprehensive containment significantly more difficult. Whether the current dynamic can be stopped will depend crucially on whether aid teams can gain safe access to the affected communities.

The Congolese government has called on the population to follow hygiene rules, report suspected cases, and follow the instructions of the health authorities. At the same time, pressure is growing on the international community to secure funding for the containment measures.
