Daejeon, 01 June 2026

At least five people died and two were seriously injured in an explosion at a Hanwha Aerospace rocket propulsion facility in Daejeon, South Korea, on Monday morning.

The blast occurred at a plant operated by Hanwha Aerospace, a major South Korean defense contractor, located approximately 150 kilometers south of the capital Seoul. Photographs from the scene showed a column of dark smoke rising from the affected building as emergency crews rushed to the area.

South Korea's Prime Minister Kim Min-seok ordered authorities to mobilize all available emergency personnel and equipment for rescue operations. Officials have warned that the death toll could climb further as search efforts continue.

The Daejeon site is considered a central hub for the Korean defense industry. The facility is responsible for developing rocket engines and manufacturing rocket propellant, work that involves handling highly volatile materials.
