The construction magnate Florentino Pérez has won Real Madrid's presidential election and is beginning a new term in office that runs until 2030, after prevailing clearly over the 37-year-old challenger Enrique Riquelme.
The election at the club's headquarters, the Ciudad Real Madrid training center in the Valdebebas district, was Real Madrid's first presidential election in roughly 20 years. Around 70,000 eligible club members were called upon to decide on the club's leadership. According to the broadcaster Deutschlandfunk, which reported on 08.06.2026, Pérez clearly received the most votes. His rival candidate Riquelme conceded defeat to journalists even before the official announcement of the result.
Riquelme, who had staged his campaign as a generational showdown, campaigned with spectacular transfer plans, including the signing of Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, and called for greater member participation. In order to even be able to run as a candidate, he had to post a guarantee of around 187 million euros, which according to reports corresponds to about 15 percent of Real Madrid's total budget of just under 1.2 billion euros.
