Around 35 percent of German citizens generally do not wear a helmet when cycling, according to a Forsa survey commissioned by broadcasters RTL and ntv, while 54 percent are in favor of a general helmet mandate.
Reasons Against Helmets
Younger people between the ages of 18 and 29, in particular, forgo head protection, as the representative survey of 1,003 people revealed. The most frequently cited reason for not wearing a helmet was short travel distances, mentioned by 42 percent of respondents. Another 23 percent cited uncomfortable helmets, 21 percent forgetfulness, 18 percent a feeling of restriction, 17 percent their cautious riding style, and 14 percent aesthetic reasons.
The Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) announced at the end of May that observations in selected regions – including Duisburg and Münster – showed that only 37 percent of cyclists wore a helmet across all age groups. This marks a decline for the second consecutive year, after the rate was 42.6 percent in 2024 and 44.4 percent in 2023. According to the data, children between six and ten years old have by far the highest helmet usage rate.
