The Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) examined 195 German cities in its Heat Check and ranked Offenburg as the city worst prepared for heat waves.
Methodology of the Heat Check
This year, the DUH evaluated all 195 German cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. In addition to the average summer temperature, population density, the size of green spaces, and the degree of soil sealing, two new categories were included in the analysis: the percentage change in soil sealing since 2018 as well as the so-called tree canopy coverage — that is, the share of the city's area covered by shade-providing trees. Using these four or six elements, respectively, the environmental organization calculates the Heat Vulnerability Index.
