Germany's Federal Court of Auditors expects the planned 88-kilometre hinterland rail link for the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel to cost €10.7 billion, significantly more than the €8.1 billion figure cited by the transport minister in November.
Rising cost estimates
According to an internal memo obtained by NDR and first reported by the Schleswig-Holsteinischer Zeitungsverlag (SHZ), the Bundesrechnungshof projects the cost of the rail connection from Lübeck via Bad Schwartau and Oldenburg in Holstein to Großenbrode at €10.7 billion. That figure is roughly one-third higher than the €8.1 billion estimate presented by Federal Transport Minister Schnieder to the Bundestag budget committee in November, as reported by the Flensburger Tageblatt. At this level, the hinterland connection would already be more expensive than the construction of the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel itself.
