On Monday, the British government released a new tranche of documents concerning the appointment and subsequent dismissal of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the USA, revealing deep internal criticism of Prime Minister Keir Starmer and serious oversights in the appointment process.
The published files comprise 340 emails or email threads, 56 WhatsApp conversations – some with hundreds of messages – 15 letters, and 26 meeting notes. They paint a picture of a government marked by internal power struggles and distrust of the Prime Minister.
Particularly explosive is a handwritten note from Mandelson to then-Foreign Secretary David Lammy from November 2024, one month before his appointment in Washington. In it, Mandelson wrote: "If you were inclined to appoint me, I would ensure you never regretted it."
