The North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of the Environment has announced that the Hambach Forest will be designated as a so-called wilderness development area and transferred into public ownership by 2035 at the latest.
The relevant authorities had reached an agreement with the owner, the energy company RWE, the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of the Environment announced. "Er solle dauerhaft unter Schutz gestellt werden, teilte das nordrhein-westfälische Umweltministerium mit." A corresponding declaration was signed on Tuesday in Düsseldorf.
In the Hambach Forest, environmental activists had fought for many years against the clearing of the forest for lignite opencast mining. The signing took place eight years after the climate protests surrounding the Hambach opencast mine in 2018.
