Background to the escalation

Outlook on a possible ceasefire

With the announcement of the cessation of operations, the Iranian leadership is sending a signal of – albeit provisional – de-escalation. At the same time, Tehran stressed that the attacks had been carried out in response to Israeli strikes against Lebanon. In doing so, the Iranian leadership explicitly places the conflict in the context of the regional conflict over Lebanon rather than as a standalone war against Israel.

The international community, and the United States in particular, now faces the challenge of securing the fragile ceasefire. Trump had named an immediate ceasefire as his goal in his remarks. Whether it will hold, according to observers, depends on whether the attacks on Lebanon are halted.
