The Berlin CDU confirmed its Governing Mayor Kai Wegner on Tuesday evening at a state party conference in Neukölln with 92.6 percent of the vote as its lead candidate for the House of Representatives election on 20 September.

At a state party conference in Neukölln, Wegner received 92.6 percent of the delegates' votes. The CDU state chairman and Governing Mayor is thus once again running as the lead candidate. He has led a government of CDU and SPD in Berlin since 2023.

The starting position is nevertheless difficult: polls currently point to a worse result for the CDU than at the last election. However, his party is still leading in the polls. The reason for the muted expectations lies in a series of burdens Wegner has had to contend with in recent months.
