Magdeburg, 08 June 2026
The car insurer of the vehicle used in the December 2024 attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market is to pay millions of euros to victims, with a total of 7.5 million euros now available for compensation, the insurer R+V confirmed to MDR Sachsen-Anhalt.
Background of the attack
On December 20, 2024, an attacker drove a car from a street through a gap in concrete barriers onto a sidewalk and then into the Magdeburg Christmas market. Six people were killed, and more than 300 people were injured, some of them very seriously. Roughly eighteen months on, those affected are now set to receive additional compensation after donations and state funds.
