A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of the Philippine island of Mindanao on Monday, killing at least 19 people; civil protection agencies see it as a warning for the megacity of Metro Manila.
The magnitude 7.8 quake struck off the coast of Mindanao and initially triggered a tsunami warning for the southern coast of the Philippines. This has since been lifted. The extent of the damage is unclear, but local civil protection agencies reported numerous deaths and injuries from the severe earthquake off the Philippines.
According to the Philippine civil defense, many of the victims died in landslides triggered by the tremors. More than 140 people were injured in the magnitude 7.8 quake, and a further four are missing. Authorities warned residents not to return to their homes because aftershocks could cause further collapses.
