Major magnitude 8.2 earthquake strikes the Philippines – tsunami warnings issued

Several early warning systems responded to the major quake. The US Tsunami Warning System („The US Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami threat to the earthquake“) classified the incident as a possible tsunami threat. The Philippines itself, along with Indonesia and Japan, also issued warnings, as stated in the note: „Indonesia and Japan have issued tsunami warnings.“

Warnings from multiple countries

The Philippine seismology agency urged residents in the affected coastal regions to leave their homes. The advisory stated: „The Philippines Seismology Agency has advised people in coastal areas in some southern provinces to evacuate to higher ground or move further inland.“ Phivolcs also stated: „Menschen in Küstennähe sollten sich schnellstens in Sicherheit bringen.“

Residents were also urged to move away from the coast. It said: „Residents have been advised to move away from the coast after the quake, which occurred at a depth of 10km.“ The authorities thus relied on a protective recommendation commonly issued during major seaquakes.

The Philippines lie along the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically particularly active zone where strong earthquakes and volcanic eruptions repeatedly occur. The region around Mindanao has been hit by major quakes several times in the past. The current measurements of a magnitude of 8.2 rank among the higher values recorded in this region.

Residents near the coast were urgently asked to follow the instructions of local authorities and move to higher-lying areas. Driving near the coast should also be avoided, it was said. The warnings were initially in effect for an indefinite period, until further data on possible wave heights becomes available.
