Magnitude 8.2 quake hits Mindanao

A major earthquake has occurred in the Philippines. The quake on the island of Mindanao had a magnitude of 8.2, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The epicenter was located at a depth of ten kilometers. The GFZ had initially reported the magnitude as 7.3 and later revised it upward.

According to the local Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the quake on the island of Mindanao had a magnitude of 8.2. The epicenter is located on the second-largest island of the Philippine archipelago. The exact time the quake struck on Monday has not yet been disclosed in detail.

The GFZ stated: „An earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck Mindanao in the Philippines on Monday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said.“ Regarding the depth, it said: „The quake was at a depth of 10km (six miles), GFZ said.“ The center also noted: „GFZ earlier pegged the earthquake at 7.3.“
