Marcus Hoffmann (CDU) has won the mayoral runoff in Aue-Bad Schlema against the Freie Sachsen candidate Stefan Hartung.
Results and turnout
According to the preliminary results of the second round, Hoffmann received 5,007 valid votes, corresponding to 52.7 percent. Stefan Hartung, who ran as the candidate of the far-right minor party Freie Sachsen, received 4,499 votes (47.3 percent). The gap between the two candidates was therefore around 500 votes.
The count in the city's 13 polling stations in the Erzgebirgskreis remained open for long stretches. After the in-person votes were tallied, Hartung was temporarily ahead by 148 votes. It was only the postal voters who turned the tide and delivered Hoffmann a clear majority. Turnout was around 62 percent, slightly higher than in the first round four weeks earlier.
