Brussels, May 5, 2026 Meta Leverages AI to Protect Children on Social Media

The US tech giant Meta is expanding its use of artificial intelligence (AI) to strictly monitor the age of children and adolescents on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Threads.

Stricter Age Controls Through AI

The new measures aim to remove children under 13 from the platforms and force teenagers who falsely claim to be adults into stricter safety settings. The AI-powered software analyzes not only text-based profile information but also the context of images, comments, and videos.

According to sources, the system will also evaluate behavioral patterns, such as how users navigate the platform and which accounts they follow. If the AI detects signs of a false age declaration, the affected profiles will automatically be converted into so-called "teen accounts." These will then be subject to more restrictive privacy and security guidelines.
