During the Ironman in Hamburg, unknown individuals scattered millimeter-sized metal splinters on a section of the cycling course in the Bergedorf district, forcing dozens of participants in the age-group race to stop with flat tires.
The incident occurred on Sunday in the Kirchwerder quarter of the Bergedorf district. According to police, the tiny millimeter-sized particles were strewn across the road surface. The splinters caused numerous tire failures on the cycling course. "On the cycling course, metal splinters caused numerous flat tires," the emergency services said.
According to police, about 50 participants were halted by bike defects. Media reports stated that as many as 150 triathletes had to interrupt or abandon their race altogether. "Many participants in the age-group race had to interrupt or even abandon the race due to flat tires," eyewitnesses reported. The professional field was not affected by the incident.
