At Build 2026, Microsoft unveiled Project Solara, a cloud-based platform where AI agents are intended to replace apps as the central interaction layer, complemented by reference devices and pilot programs with major retail and healthcare corporations.

Architecture: Cloud Agents Instead of Local AI

According to documentation presented at the conference, Microsoft views Project Solara as a chip-to-cloud platform whose operating system exists on both the end device and in the Azure cloud. The goal is a new device category where the focus is no longer on individual applications, but on specialized AI agents that handle tasks through voice, visual input, or multimodal interactions. Microsoft stated the maturity of the concept: "We are still early."
