Material Change from Aluminum to Lead
Microsoft justifies the material change with significantly increased reliability. According to the company, the average lifespan of the qubits has increased to about 20 seconds, with individual cases reaching up to a minute. In common quantum processors from other manufacturers, qubit lifetimes are usually measured in microseconds. Jason Zander stated that performance has improved by a factor of 1000 in some areas due to the material change.
Technically, Majorana 2 is based on so-called tetrons. These are a variant of topological qubits consisting of two superconducting nanowires with Majorana zero modes at their ends. Quantum information is to be stored via parity, i.e., via the evenness or oddness of the electron count in the topological wire. Basic operations are performed through measurements, with each parity measurement yielding a value of 0 or 1.
