Million-Euro Damage from Two Fires at the Kulturspeicher Ueckermünde – One Firefighter Injured

On Sunday morning around 1:50 a.m., the fire department had to be called out for a second time. The rescue control center received the report at around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. The flames spread throughout the 17th- and 18th-century building during the night, as police reported. "Die Flammen breiteten sich im ganzen Gebäude aus - die Löscharbeiten dauerten bis zum Vormittag," police further stated. Flames were already visible in the roof structure area when the emergency services arrived.

First Fire on Saturday Evening

One firefighter was injured during the firefighting operations and taken to a hospital. In total, "eine Person wurde bei dem Brand verletzt," as it was said. Several residents from three adjacent residential units on Bergstraße had to be evacuated. They were then accommodated in the Bürgerhall in Ueckermünde.

The Kulturspeicher, which also contains holiday apartments, was entirely damaged by the fire. "Die Wohnungen sind nicht mehr bewohnbar," police said. The firefighting operations continued. The criminal police can only begin their investigation once the fire has been extinguished.

Second Fire in the Night to Sunday

The public prosecutor's office ordered the deployment of a fire cause investigator. "Nach derzeitigem Erkenntnisstand sei es am wahrscheinlichsten, dass auch für den zweiten Brand ein technischer Defekt die Ursache war," the investigators explained. "Warum das Feuer ausbrach, ist bislang unklar," it was simultaneously said from another source.

The police currently estimate the total damage at at least approximately one million euros. The total damage thus amounts to a million-euro loss. Police referred in this context to ongoing investigations into the exact cause of the fire.

The heritage-listed half-timbered granary housed, among other things, an art gallery, a regional shop, and regular events. The Kulturspeicher, opened in 2007, is located on the Stettiner Haff. It is part of the cultural offerings of the town of Ueckermünde in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald.
