Munich, 08 June 2026

After an interruption of roughly two hours caused by the evacuation of the tower, Munich Airport resumed flight operations step by step on Sunday evening and during the following night.

On Sunday evening at 8:33 p.m., the tower at Munich Airport was evacuated due to the smell of smoke, as an airport spokesperson told Deutschlandfunk. The air traffic controller on duty and other staff members left their workstations, and flight operations were immediately halted. As the airport further explained, however, there had been no open fire and no development of smoke.

Following the evacuation, the airport fire brigade was alerted. As it later turned out, the alarm was triggered by a defect in a ventilation device; a component was replaced. The tower was then able to be re-occupied, and around two hours after the evacuation individual aircraft resumed operations.
