Munich Airport's air traffic control tower was evacuated on Sunday evening after staff detected a smell of burning, suspending flight operations at Germany's second-busiest hub for approximately two hours before departures resumed overnight.
According to a report broadcast on Deutschlandfunk and attributed to the dpa news channel, the incident began at 20:33 on Sunday, when air traffic controllers in the tower noticed the smell of smoke. "Mitarbeiter der Flugsicherung hatten im Tower Brandgeruch wahrgenommen," the report stated, and the tower was subsequently cleared, "der daraufhin geräumt wurde." The airport confirmed the evacuation, noting in a statement, "Am Sonntag hatte der Flughafen mitgeteilt."

Deutsche Flugsicherung, Germany's national air navigation service provider, reacted immediately. As the agency announced, "Die Deutsche Flugsicherung hat den Flugbetrieb bis auf weiteres gestoppt," and "Die Flugsicherung stoppte daraufhin sofort den Flugbetrieb." Aircraft on approach and those preparing to depart were held on the ground, while the airport fire department was also alerted, "außerdem wurde die Flughafenfeuerwehr alarmiert."
