Lopez and Goldstein: From Script to Screen

According to People magazine, Jennifer Lopez initially thought the Brit Brett Goldstein was rougher: "He's one of my favorite characters. I thought he was more like the character, but he was so gentle and sweet and completely different." In the film, Lopez plays a woman in a position of power, which Goldstein consciously described as a twist on her previous rom-coms: "If you've seen all her rom-coms – like I have – you notice: she always plays characters of rather low status, who are striving for something and are, in a way, on the fringes."

Goldstein, who works as an actor, comedian, producer, and writer in Great Britain, consciously wrote the role with Lopez in mind. He explained to "Late Night With Seth Meyers" how he sent her the script: "You are at the very top of our list; there is only one name on that list. If you say no, we won't make the film." Lopez then agreed. Goldstein emphasized why he wanted to work with the 56-year-old: "We therefore wanted to tell a slightly more mature story – something I had never seen from her before."

Goldstein's Path: Roy Kent and His Own Projects

The 45-year-old Goldstein had his international breakthrough as Roy Kent in the Apple TV series "Ted Lasso," a role for which he won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Originally, he was only involved as a writer for the series before being cast in the role of the gruff but soft-hearted professional footballer. In an appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," he later recounted this casting story. "Ted Lasso" originally ended in 2023, and a new season is announced for Apple TV starting in August, in which Goldstein will appear again.

In addition to "Ted Lasso," Goldstein is a co-writer and actor in the Apple TV series "Shrinking" alongside Jason Segel and Harrison Ford. He also wrote the lead role for himself in the Apple TV film "All of You." With "Escorted," he is working on a romantic comedy series for Prime Video, in which he plays a divorced father who accidentally falls into the escort business. Against this backdrop, "Office Romance" is another building block in a career that consistently sees Goldstein working between his own writing and his own performances.

Two Streaming Highlights in One Summer

The release on Netflix comes just two months before the planned premiere of the new "Ted Lasso" season. This means Goldstein will be prominently featured with two major streaming projects in the summer of 2026: the Netflix premiere of "Office Romance" and the return of Roy Kent on Apple TV.
