Germany's three major mobile network operators — O2 Telefónica, Deutsche Telekom, and Vodafone — are cooperating with satellite companies to close dead zones in Germany from space starting in 2027 or 2028.
Three operators, three strategies
The pressure to close the last white spots on Germany's mobile network map is growing. All three major providers are relying on satellites that are meant to communicate directly with standard smartphones. So far, no customer can connect to the networks of the three established German operators — Telekom, Vodafone, and O2 — via space. That is set to change in the coming years.
O2 Telefónica announced a collaboration with the Luxembourg-based satellite operator OQ Technology. Tests are to begin in early 2027 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in the Waren an der Müritz area. The ground tests could last around a year. O2 board member Jörg Kablitz stated: „Der satellitengestützte Dienst kann die bestehenden Mobilfunknetze künftig ergänzen. Dort, wo der Ausbau am Boden nur mit hohem Aufwand oder gar nicht möglich ist."
