The full transition of operations is set for the major timetable change in December 2026. At that point, Länderbahn will take over the S-Bahn lines S3, S5, and S5X from the current operator, DB Regio.

Since winning the contract in 2023, the company has hired the majority of the 350 additional employees needed for the expanded service. Recruitment and training have been a central focus ahead of the operational handover.

The new fleet is part of a broader overhaul of regional rail services in Saxony-Anhalt. Transport officials have emphasized the need for modern, reliable trains to encourage a shift from car to public transit.

FDP politician Lydia Hüskens commented on the importance of such investments. "Zur Freiheit gehört auch eine echte Auswahl des Verkehrsmittels," she said, linking transport options to personal freedom.

The Halle-Leipzig corridor is one of the busiest regional rail links in central Germany. The introduction of longer, higher-capacity trains aims to ease overcrowding during peak hours.
