Nosferatu spider continues to spread: confirmed sightings now also in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Lübeck

Lübeck and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern newly affected

There are also now sightings from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which long remained one of the few federal states without a confirmed population. The first documented specimen from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was found in 2022 and had verifiably arrived in the country in a travel suitcase. „Damit wird es immer wahrscheinlicher, dass sich die Spinne dort etabliert. Womöglich ist sie bereits im letzten bisher noch nicht besiedelten Bundesland zu Hause“, sagte Wirth.

Between January and May of the current year, NABU received more than 2,500 photo-submitted reports of the species, according to the organization. For 2026, Wirth expects another „Nosferatu-Jahr“ if the trend continues. „Wir freuen uns, wenn weiter jeder Fund gemeldet wird, am besten mit Foto. Characteristics and behavior

As a predominantly nocturnal hunter, the Nosferatu spider can also overpower larger prey, according to NABU. „Durch ihr Gift, einen robusten Körperbau und ihre Geschicklichkeit bei der Jagd wird die überwiegend nachtaktive Spinne den Angaben zufolge auch mit recht großer Beute fertig.“ The species owes its name to a striking pattern on its front body section. As the Karlsruhe Natural History Museum explained in April, the pattern reminds many observers of the face of the vampire from the eponymous film Nosferatu. „Der Name leitet sich von der charakteristischen Zeichnung auf dem Vorderkörper ab, die viele kreative Betrachter an die Fratze des Vampirs aus dem gleichnamigen Kinofilm Nosferatu erinnert“, hieß es.
