Görlitz, 31 May 2026

Octavian Ursu of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) won a second term as mayor of Görlitz on Sunday, defeating Alternative for Germany (AfD) challenger Sebastian Wippel in a runoff election.

According to official results published by the city on its website, Ursu received 55.8 percent of the vote, while Wippel took 44.8 percent. Voter turnout in the second round reached 56.8 percent among the approximately 44,500 eligible voters in the eastern Saxon city on the Polish border.

The runoff became necessary after no candidate secured an absolute majority in the first round on May 10. In that initial vote, Ursu led with 49.1 percent, ahead of Wippel's 44.3 percent. Two other candidates finished far behind the two frontrunners.
