Opel Management Confirms: Next Astra Generation Will Be Built in Rüsselsheim

Stellantis manager Emanuele Cappellano underlined the strategic significance of the investment. "The investment in the production of the next Astra generation in Rüsselsheim underlines Stellantis' focus on Germany as well as the importance of Opel," explained Cappellano. Huettl added that with the decision, the company is combining "a long-term commitment to the site and further investments in Germany." Overall, Stellantis plans investments of more than one billion euros at Opel sites, according to its own statements, with the largest share going to Rüsselsheim.

Reactions from Politics and the Works Council

The current Astra generation has only been on the market for a few months. Exactly when production of the new generation will start is not yet known. However, according to an Opel employee, the decision gives the workforce at the site planning security for the next three years. Around 1,350 production jobs at the Rüsselsheim headquarters are thus considered secured for the coming years.

Hesse's Economics Minister Kaweh Mansoori (SPD) assessed the announcement as a positive signal after a series of bad news for employees. "After many bad news for employees in recent years, this is a much-needed glimmer of hope," said Mansoori. Rüsselsheim's Mayor Patrick Burghardt (CDU) also expressed relief and spoke of a "good and long-awaited piece of news for our city."

Significance for Employees

The Opel works council in Rüsselsheim sees it as a positive sign that the new Astra generation is to be built exclusively in Rüsselsheim and not also at another plant. Huettl emphasized that awarding the next Astra generation to the Rüsselsheim plant reaffirms Opel's commitment to Germany as an industrial location. The investment is "a clear sign that we are reaching agreements together with our social partners that benefit all those involved," he said.

The announcement was made against the backdrop of tense conditions in the European automotive industry. Stellantis had only recently announced that it wanted to reduce production capacity by 800,000 vehicles due to falling demand in Europe. All the greater was the relief in Rüsselsheim and in Hesse over the site decision.

With the full development of the new generation at the Rüsselsheim development center, the site is also being strengthened as the model's engineering center. The company has so far withheld information on the production timeline and further details about the new Astra generation.
