Pope Leo XIV. delivered a half-hour peace speech on Monday before the Spanish Parliament in Madrid, in which he warned of a worldwide arms buildup and called for greater aid for migrants.
Pope Leo XIV., the head of the Roman Catholic Church, addressed members of the Congress and Senate of the Spanish Parliament on Monday as part of his one-week visit to Spain. After the roughly half-hour address, parliamentary members rose for a standing ovation. According to Deutschlandfunk, the speech marked the third day of his trip.
In his address, the Pope warned of a profound crisis. "Eskalierende Konflikte und Polarisierung drängten die Welt in eine tiefgehende geistige und kulturelle Krise," he said. He described wars as a failure of diplomacy: "Jeder Krieg stellt letztlich eine schmerzhafte Niederlage der Fähigkeit zu Verhandeln und des gemeinsamen Gewissens der Menschheit dar, das Verbindungen der Gerechtigkeit zwischen den Nationen anerkennt."
