Vatican City, 27 May 2026
Pope Leo XIV personally went to the aid of a man who collapsed from the heat during the general audience at St. Peter's Square on Wednesday.
Immediate Response
The incident occurred as the pilgrim was standing in a queue to shake the Pope's hand after the audience. Temperatures in Rome reached around 32 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit) at midday, with an African high-pressure system driving a heatwave across Italy.
Witnesses reported that the man suddenly fainted due to the intense heat. The Pope, who was still greeting the faithful, immediately knelt down next to the collapsed pilgrim while Vatican staff quickly provided first aid.
Helpers held up a parasol to shield the man from the direct sun as medical personnel attended to him. After receiving initial care on the spot, the man was transported away in a wheelchair.
