A research team at the University of Magdeburg has developed a new method to reduce the previously little-noticed noises of electric cars by filling cavities in vehicle components with granulate made from old car tires.

Electric cars run more quietly, but not silently. While outside of electric cars the rolling of the tires is most clearly audible, inside the vehicle it is often the vibrations of the electronics that are perceived by drivers. The research team describes the sounds as whining, whistling, and humming. The frequency is in each case higher than the hum of a combustion engine, which is only a few hertz, and is therefore perceived as more unpleasant.
