The presidential runoff in Peru is shaping up as a tight race between right-wing conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori and left-wing politician Roberto Sánchez.

After a preliminary count of more than 45 percent of the votes, Fujimori had just under 53 percent while Sánchez reached 47 percent, according to the electoral authority of the South American country, which announced the figures overnight into Monday (local time).

Preliminary Results and Voter Turnout

More than 27 million Peruvians were called to cast their ballots on Sunday, in a country of around 35 million inhabitants. Because the result still rests on many votes that have not yet been counted, the race remains too close to call.

After the full count is completed, the Supreme Electoral Court has until mid-July to officially declare a winner. The inauguration of the new president is scheduled for July 28.

Timeline Leading to the Inauguration

The runoff became necessary because in April none of the 35 candidates had secured the required majority to win the presidency in the first round. It is the ninth presidential election within a decade.
