Saalekreis, 07 June 2026

Voters in the Saalekreis went to the polls on Sunday to elect a new Landrat, with four candidates competing to succeed Hartmut Handschak, whose term ends on 1 November.

The election in the district, which has around 182,500 inhabitants, drew attention beyond Saxony-Anhalt because AfD candidate Uwe Arendt, a 59-year-old Kriminalhauptkommissar, could become the first politician from his party to serve as a Landrat in the state. A win would also extend the AfD's footprint among Germany's district administrators following Robert Sesselmann's victory in the Thuringian district of Sonneberg, described in the verified reporting as the first time an AfD politician was elected Landrat anywhere in Germany.
