Series Remake of "Cape Fear" Premieres on Apple TV+: Javier Bardem Steps into the Role of Max Cady

In June, "Cape Fear" will be made into a series for the first time on Apple TV, promising to add even more depth to the nerve-wracking psychological terror of the source material. As of now, "Cape Fear" is conceived as a miniseries, meaning there will only be this one season. This format significantly distinguishes it from previous feature film adaptations while retaining the core plot of the original.

Javier Bardem as the New Max Cady

A monster is unleashed – that's what it's all about: The happily married lawyer couple Anna (Amy Adams, 51) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson, 52) have no idea what disaster will soon befall them and their family. Max Cady, a man released from prison, seeks revenge and systematically makes the family the target of his psychological terror campaign.

The casting of Javier Bardem in the role of the serial villain for "Cape Fear" can certainly be considered a coup. After all, the character actor impressed almost exactly 20 years ago as the terrifying psycho in the Oscar-winning "No Country for Old Men," earning him the Academy Award for "Best Supporting Actor" for his performance. The fact that this is likely to succeed is primarily due to one man who has already proven with Oscar-winning performances his unparalleled ability to embody a psychopathic monster: Javier Bardem (57).

The Bowdens in the Crossfire: Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson

The casting of the Bowdens also reads like a "best of" from contemporary Hollywood cinema. Amy Adams, who most recently garnered international attention for her roles in "Arrival" and "Vice," takes on the part of Anna Bowden, originally played by Jessica Lange and later by Juliette Lewis. Patrick Wilson, known from the "Conjuring" films, portrays the cornered husband and lawyer. Wilson has already had to deal with pure evil (and in both cases, supernatural evil) in the successful and multi-part horror series "Insidious" and "The Conjuring."

It's also worth looking at the producer list for the series, as both former "Cape Fear" director Martin Scorsese and Hollywood visionary Steven Spielberg are listed. The combination of Scorsese's directorial experience with the material and Spielberg's instinct for high-gloss serial productions is considered a promising mix in Hollywood. However, in the case of "Cape Fear," this is unlikely to be an option.

Other New Releases of the Week at a Glance

In total, the adaptation comprises ten episodes, which are scheduled to be released on Apple TV+ in June. The streaming provider is thus embarking on an experiment that certainly has attention-grabbing potential amidst the current flood of series. The miniseries format allows the creators to spread out the slow, agonizing escalation of the threat over several hours, rather than compressing it into the tight 130 minutes of a feature film.

In addition to "Cape Fear," the streaming market offers a whole host of other new releases this week. Amazon is showing "A Man Called Otto" with Tom Hanks as a bitter widower, while Sky/WOW is launching the horror series "Coyotes" with Kate Bosworth and Justin Long. Netflix is releasing "The Witness," a true-crime miniseries about the Rachel Nickell murder case, as well as the French psychological thriller "No One Will Know" starring "Pulp Fiction" actress Maria de Medeiros.

Also new to the lineup: "Queer" with Daniel Craig as an exile in 1950s Mexico, directed by Luca Guadagnino based on the cult novel by William S. Burroughs. On Disney+, the comedy series "Not Suitable for Work" by Mindy Kaling premieres, and Netflix is also showing the romantic comedy "Office Romance" with Jennifer Lopez, Brett Goldstein, and Jodie Whittaker.

The horror genre is also spiced up by "The Blackening," a film about a group of friends caught in a deadly game in a remote cabin. In total, the weekly overview lists nine new series and films distributed across multiple platforms.

The adaptation of "Cape Fear" could prove to be one of the most discussed series events of the summer, especially since Bardem's casting is already generating buzz before the premiere. Whether the miniseries achieves or even surpasses the thrill of previous film adaptations will be shown by the reactions of the viewers.
