In the 2026 annual report, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) puts the estimated total number of nuclear weapons worldwide at approximately 12,187. Although this places the stockpile slightly below the previous year's figure, the number of operationally available warheads is rising according to SIPRI. According to the institute, around 4,012 warheads are already deployed on missiles or aircraft, with some 2,100 to 2,200 on high alert, the majority of them in Russia and the United States, and to a lesser extent in France and the United Kingdom.
