Sony shows new games at State of Play: "Wolverine", "God of War: Laufey" and a remake of "Tomb Raider"

What "Marvel's Wolverine" is about

In addition to Jean Grey, Insomniac also confirmed appearances by Mystique and Sabretooth. Jean Grey will occasionally fight alongside Wolverine in the game. Logan is played and voiced by Australian actor Liam McIntyre. The game was first announced in 2021, after a ransomware attack on Insomniac in 2023 led to an early leak of gameplay material.

Creative Director Marcus Smith described the project as "a focused single-player adventure with a globe-spanning journey and high stakes, where there's more at stake than just saving a few mutants." The combat system relies on fast-paced melee action, special attacks, and Wolverine's self-healing powers. Newly introduced techniques include "Bull Rush" and "Tornado Spin."

Combat System and Visual Design

Every hit and every kill fills Logan's rage meter, which unlocks stronger attacks and activates the healing factor. At maximum rage level, the game switches to a monochrome visual style inspired by the Marvel comic series "Black, White, and Blood." Motorcycle chases and larger action set pieces also play an important role. The game is designed as a pure story experience without a multiplayer mode.

In parallel, Sony announced another "God of War" game titled "God of War: Laufey," developed by Sony Santa Monica. Players will take on the perspective of Faye, Kratos' deceased wife. Faye is voiced by actress Deborah Ann Woll. Sony Santa Monica did not provide a specific release date.

Other Announcements from State of Play

Also shown was "Onimusha: Way of the Sword," which is set to be released for PS5 on September 25, 2026. A playable demo is available now in the PlayStation Store. Additionally, Crystal Dynamics announced "Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis," a full remake of the first "Tomb Raider" adventure, which is scheduled for release on February 12, 2027.

Other titles announced during the presentation include "Rayman Legends: Retold" (October 1), "Silent Hill: Townfall" (September 24, 2026), "Until Dawn 2" from Firesprite (2027), "No Rest for the Wicked" (1.0 release in October, also for consoles), and "Control Resonant" (September 24). Furthermore, there was a reminder of GTA 6, which is set to be released in November. Naughty Dog was absent from this State of Play broadcast.

Exclusivity and Platform Strategy

Regarding platform strategy, Sony announced, according to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, that single-player productions will be offered exclusively for PS5 in the future. In recent years, Sony had also released its flagship single-player games for PC with a delay. All three "Spider-Man" games from Insomniac are already available on PC. "Rumors, which Sony has not commented on, suggest that there may not be a PC port, even with a delay."

The game "Marvel's Wolverine" is described by Insomniac Games as darker and more brutal than the "Spider-Man" series. This underscores the shift in tone from the studio's previous Marvel adaptations.
